How the 140-character title, 13 tags and attribute fields divide the work.

How many tags can an Etsy listing have? Thirteen, each capped at 20 characters, with a title of up to 140 characters. Thirteen is a hard ceiling, so treat tag slots as a budget to allocate rather than a box for every word you can think of.

AI is useful for generating candidates inside those limits and removing duplicates. It can't tell you what buyers actually call your product: that comes from your own shop search terms, support questions and competitor reviews. If you also sell on Amazon or Shopify, start from one accurate source description and reformat it for each.

How many tags can an Etsy listing have?

Up to 13, and each tag is capped at 20 characters including spaces, so anything longer simply won't save. Do I need to use all 140 characters in an Etsy title?

No, 140 is a limit, not a target. Etsy's recent guidance points towards titles that read like a description a person can parse, with the most important words first. Keep the core category term within the first 40 characters, and avoid pipes or comma-stuffing, repeating a word three or more times, all caps and promotional words. Read more →
